These questions did not begin in philosophy. They began in a classroom.

For some years, I have taught mathematics while also working in educational leadership. When students began submitting work that was fluent, well-structured, and often correct, yet difficult for them to explain, defend, or genuinely inhabit as their own, it became clear that something important had shifted. The issue was not simply misconduct, nor merely a new tool. It concerned the conditions under which thinking was being required of the learner in the first place.

That experience led to Thinking When Machines Think, an ongoing body of essays on judgement, education, and artificial intelligence.

The central claim is simple, though its consequences are not. The deepest impact of AI may not be that machines perform more tasks, but that they increasingly intervene earlier in the human process of thought: framing questions, structuring possibilities, and offering conclusions before the mind has fully had to determine what it is trying to understand.

I describe this condition as delegated thinking: not the delegation of labour, but the gradual delegation of cognitive initiative itself.

When that happens repeatedly, what is at risk is not only originality or effort. It is the formation of judgement: the capacity to discern what matters, deliberate under uncertainty, and accept responsibility for what one decides.

Intellectual Stance

These essays develop a set of distinctions that I believe have become necessary.

  • Between execution and judgement.
  • Between obtaining a correct result and being formed by the process of reaching it.
  • Between evaluation within a given frame and the prior act of recognising what the frame should be.
  • Between fluency of output and maturity of mind.

These are not merely theoretical differences. They carry practical consequences for curriculum, assessment, institutional design, and for the role of the teacher in an age increasingly organised around convenience, prediction, and automation.

Technology deserves seriousness, not superstition. It can extend human capability in remarkable ways. But education cannot define itself merely as adaptation to new tools. Its deeper task is to preserve and strengthen the forms of human development that tools cannot replace.

Background

I am Director of Fundación Felipe Segovia and Fundación UCJC, both part of SEK Education Group, and Director of the Global Education Forum.

Alongside this work, I continue to teach IB Mathematics in the Diploma Programme. I have chosen to remain in the classroom because serious reflection about education should remain in contact with the lived reality of learning.

My academic background combines telecommunications engineering, history, and business education. Before moving fully into the educational sector, I spent many years in international telecommunications and strategic consulting, working on projects related to institutional transformation, technology, and public policy across different countries.

That combination of technical formation, historical perspective, classroom practice, and institutional responsibility has shaped the perspective from which I write.

Execution can be delegated.


Judgement cannot.

Education exists to preserve that distinction, not by rejecting technology, but by ensuring that human beings continue to develop the capacities for which no system can finally substitute.

On authorship

I use artificial intelligence tools as linguistic and structural assistants. In practice, this involves an iterative dialogue in which I develop ideas, test formulations, and refine arguments through interaction with the system, often starting from my own notes, drafts and references. These tools may assist with the execution of language or structure, but the ideas, arguments and judgments expressed on this site are entirely my own.
